Money is anything that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services and repayment of debts. The main functions of money are as a medium of exchange, a unit of account, and a store of value. In the past, money was almost always commodity money, money with intrinsic value from the commodity of which it is made (eg. gold and silver coins, shells, tobacco leaves, grain). However, modern monetary systems are based on fiat money – money without intrinsic value, but declared by a government to be legal tender, that is, it must be accepted as a form of payment for 'all debts, public and private'. The term "price system" is sometimes used to refer to methods using commodity valuation or money accounting systems.

The money supply of a country is usually held to consist of currency (banknotes and coins) and 'deposit money' (the balance held in checking accounts and savings accounts). These demand deposits usually account for a much larger part of the money supply than currency. Deposit money is intangible and exists only in the form of various bank records. Despite being intangible, deposit money still performs the basic functions of money, as checks are generally accepted as a form of payment and as a means of transferring ownership of deposit money.

How much money do I have to take with me after getting my work visa for Australia?
Q. I want to know how much money I should have before entering Australia as a single baker. This money should be the money that I would spend on my rent and stuff like that. So, if you are into immigration rules, or you are an Australian who knows about immigration, please let me know about it. I don't want to take a lot of money, say AUD1000, just for some months until I secure myself a job. Thank you.

A. First off, for all of the answers to all of your questions regarding immigration, visas, Australian life in general etc, follow this link to the very informative government site: How much money you will need in the first instance depends on how much you want to spend, and also on what visa you are entering Australia. If you are coming as a PR, then there is no minimum. If its a working holiday, its a sum sufficient to support yourself, often held to be $5,000. Rent will cost you anything up to $450 per week, but could be as low as $100 if you are sharing . Food will be from $50 to $100 per week depending on how many takeaways you have. Public transport at say $5 - $10per day. Then there is your going out money - which can be anything… [cont.]

who gives money to political parties to raise money for the campaign?
Q. I am just curious to know, who gives so much money for campaigning? According to Sheila Krumholz, the executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics, the presidential candidates alone have already raised more than $1.5 billion since the election cycle started in January 2007. Is that a joke? I know that to show ads on TV, they need some money but 1.5 BILLION is way too much.

A. Yeah...lots of people campaign on a platform of campaign reform, but somehow...they always tend to forget about reform once elected. Money comes from Corporations and special interests, but alot of it is also individual donations. Obama actually sells his campaign signs and banners to supporters instead of giving them freebies, so that's a new way to raise money.

How will we have money to support millions of more people in the future?
Q. How will the system of money work to keep from having an extremely disproprotionate balance of wealth and poverty if the rate of population growth continues to soar and we have many millions of more people in the future? Does the system of money have a mechanism built in to combat something like this? For instance, will more money be made (not currency) in order to support more people? What is money? Is it silver or what?

A. Peoples labor will create more stuff so the size of the economy increases with the population. Central banks (the federal reserve in the US) increase the currency and credit available to support the economic growth. When money was based on the gold standard and the money supply was fixed, prices fell with increased production, but the economic growth rates were low compared to today. Most "money" is really credit or promises to pay and currency is the unit of measure. We make most of our payments with checks or credit cards, not cash. The population growth in the world is slowing down and is expected to stabilize in about 2050, If it were to continue to soar we would eventually run out of food and resources, but that is not expected to… [cont.]
