Can International Student start a restuarant in the United Sates?
Q. Hi, I am an international student who is studying in CA. I cook well, so I want to rent a unit and open a small restaurant. However, I am not really sure can I, as an international student would be able to start a restaurant here. If yes, is it necessarily to apply any kind of license to run it. Thanks!

A. You are not allowed to work off-campus without an EAD card. Self-employment is employment. If you qualified for an EAD card, you are allowed to accept employment, even with your business because a company is a separate entity from its employees, but you cannot work more than 20 hours a week. Your best bet would be to open a restaurant and not be involved in its day to day operation, i.e., don't prepare the food, don't operate the cash register, don't mop the floor, etc. Just oversee its operation, and let the employees run the day to day activities. Hire a manager. It would be more like an investment than employment that way. The license question is not an immigration question.

what is the difference between an international airport and a domestic one?
Q. I mean, let's imagine (maybe it is so) that i.e. Salt Lake City airport is an international airport, but they are actually no international flights, just domestic ones. Is he then still an international airport, even with just domestic flights? Or what does an airport needs to have to be classified "international" (besides customs...)?
Asked by Michael S - Mon Jun 2 13:05:13 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Michael, the only thing that an airport needs to have an "International" label on it is U.S.Customs. Not necessarily for passengers, but for freight shipments. There are many airports that have only domestic flights, but have customs inspectors, so the airport gets the international label. Charleston, WV is one such airport. You can visit its website at the URL below. Regards, Dan

What minor would be best to accompany an International Affairs major?
Q. At Northeastern they offer double majors: International Affairs and Anthropology International Affairs and Economics International Affairs and Environmental Studies International Affairs and Foreign Language International Affairs and Political Science What would be a good combination? I plan obtain a minor in psychology. Thanks! I speak fluent Portuguese and Spanish. I was planning on taking some classes to brush up on formal speaking.

A. You want to choose the foreign language combination and your minor should be in another languge, not psychology. The two most useful languages for obtaining employment in your field are Chinese and Arabic.

What will happen to current Dubai International Airport when the new one starts operating?
Q. They have just opened a new terminal at Dubai International and at the same time they are building a huge thing only 35 km away in Jabel Ali called Al-Maktoum International Airport. Does anyone know what would happen to Dubai International when the new one starts working in a few years time? Please dont just say arabs are rich and they've got a lot of money bla de bla de bla. Serious answers only please!

A. It's common in many urban cities and countries to have more than one international airport like the case of Tokyo and London. The Al Maktoum International Airport will complement and expand the operations of the Dubai International. This means that both airports will have specific regional flights to serve. A high speed railway is also planned to connect the two airports. Oh, and note that the expected turnover of the new airport is in 2017, not really a "few year's time".

What do you think about international adoption?
Q. I am currently in the proces of adopting a child from China. Recently, there has been a lot of debate regarding international adoption. A lot of people ask why I am adopting from another country when there are kids here that need to be adopted. I feel the system in the US is too hard to deal with and that the adoptive parents do not have as many rights as the birthmother. She can decide to not terminate parental rights at any time. It should be her perrogative, but I don't want to have a failed placement. That's why I've chosen international adoption. What's your opinion? My husband does not want to foster. Now...I am a preschool teacher for under privlaged kids (poor, foster, adopted, and split home). I am a very strong believer in American adoption, when I am ready I am adopting from the US instead of having my own. Untill people are with the system they really don't understand exactly how many babies, toddlers, and children are in America that are in need of love and family. Unfortunatly our system doesn't screen the foster parents great and dont keep up on them great. I have seen MANY children that are in foster homes, not being taken care of well and with very mean foster parents in homes that the children should never be placed… [cont.]

Can an international student work in Canada after suspended?
Q. A foreign student came to Ontario as an international university student. However, he got suspended because of failing grades. He would not be able to continue studying for 8 months. Does the VISA allow him to work in Canada during that period?
Asked by freakonomics - Sun Sep 30 02:26:30 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Hi. The student should contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) immediately. They require immediate reporting if there are any changes to the information submitted on the original Canadian Study Permit. Matter of fact, until recently students were suppose to report a change in their major, although that is no longer the case. If the CIC isn't contacted and the proper documentation isn't issued for the extension, the chances of the student picking up their studies at their Canadian university in 8 months is slim to none. I would imagine that the school is also reponsible for reporting both the student's suspension and reinstatement to the CIC, so it's doubtful that there's any getting around it from the student's perspective.… [cont.]

How does an airport qualify to be called international?
Q. I live near two "international" airports and neither one has customs nor has either arrivals or departures from any country other than the continental United States The largest plane that flies into one is a 737--and that's not big. That same airport is smaller than some of the regional airports I've flown into. There has to be some type of qualification for it to be called International other than recieving international flights.
Asked by redplanetexplorer - Sat Mar 15 11:10:27 2008 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments
A. It can be an international airport if private planes entering from foreign are allowed to land there. In that case Customs Inspectors (not agents) meets the flights. By law a private plane entering from foreign must land at the first designated airport to make entry. They have to provide at least two hours advanced notice to CBP.

A. A lot of Universities have programs for international students to work on campus. With your student visa you can apply for a social security card to with on campus, things like library etc. Of course every university might have their own policies, but mine is really great about this. Also, maybe try doing private tutoring or language instruction. Post on boards and stuff. good luck

How do I make an international phone call?
Q. Quick question: How do I make an international phone call to a friends cell phone in Brazil if they do not have international calling access? Is there anyway to do this so I can be charged for the entire amount? I am calling from the United States. Thanks!

A. If they don't have international calling access and they are in Brazil - you can't call them. When you are outside the U.S. you have to have a special chip in your phone that allows phone calls. If they don't have it, it won't work. If you do happen to get through, they will be charged for an incoming international call.

Does the international response for the opening of the northwest passage bother you?
Q. So after hundreds of years of burning fossil fuels and increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide, the arctic sea ice is melting to a record low. The international response? It looks something like this: "Wow, there is up to 25% of the world's undiscovered fossil fuels lying under there for us to claim, and look! We can use this area as a major shipping lane, too!" Does this seem a bit self-destructive? To capitalize on this newly exposed area of the earth to accelerate the process of what has caused it to occur in the first place? I'd like to hear your opinions.

A. This mentality is to be expected. There is big money in finding more supplies of oil. You really can't blame oil companies though. they are just supplying what we as consumers demand-- cheap energy for our homes and cars. There is no sign that we will give up our modern lifestye which is based on more and more demands for energy. As for a northern shipping route, hey why not? It will save time and fuel if it becomes feasible. Humans have done self destructive things from the begining, it won't stop now.

Where would an international studies major find the best work in California?
Q. I have recently graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in International studies with a focus on cultural studies and am interested in moving to california. I've always lived on the east coast, specifically a suburb of Washington D.C. and I'm well aware that I could find a lot of work here in D.C, but I would really like to move out of the area in order to experience a new area and I've always liked California, but the only issue is cost. My aunt lives in Hermosa Beach and I've heard that even there it's over priced, so I'd like to find a place that is not quite extremely expensive, yet I could still find a lot of work in my field of study. It would be great if some CA residence could help on my endeaver. Thanks!

A. Honestly, the best places for you to find work in your field is in the San Francisco Bay area or the Los Angeles area. Unless you want to live in a not-so-nice section of these areas, or someplace far away from work, you will have to pay quite a bit for rent.

A. You can find every kind of volunteering opportunity you have named, at a variety of organizations, all over the USA, at these web sites: VolunteerMatch, Idealist, Change.org, CraigsList, Network for Good, ServeNet, Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site, There's also this government sponsored site, which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc. If you want to be a volunteer to help with the consequences of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina, you need to register and prepare NOW. Here's a web site where you can register and start your preparation so that you… [cont.]

Are international marketing and international consumer behavior the same subject?
Q. I wanted to write a research paper on international marketing, but my professor changed my topic to international consumer behavior. Aren't those two the same? Please help! Thanks!

A. No they are not. It's more like consumer behavior is an entity of marketing. Marketing is getting the product/service out there. Consumer behavior determines how they market it. Totally different.

Would attending an international school for a year cause any problems?
Q. Next year I will be in grade 10 and I am planning to attend "Wroclaw International School" in Poland. It follows a New Zealand ciriculam. I am currently living in Canada and attending a public school here. I am wondering if this could cause any problems with graduation and all. I plan to return to Canada after my grade 10 year in Poland to finish off grade 11 and 12 in Canada.

A. Such understanding of reciprocity are agreed upon before such a venture is taken. If not, maybe you should reconsider. There are responsibilities of the host as well as home school. If you are unaware or these. then it is surely not something that you should do as you already have a problem
