Does MAS control the movement of interest rates? Who influence the movement of the 3 mth SIBOR rates?
Q. Is it speculators who influence the rates? Or is the rates set by the ABS (Association of Banks in Spore)? How do they know when to increase or decrease the rates (3mth SIBOR).. Do they follow any certain news?? Tried to find a answer for these questions by searching the Net but to no avail.. Hopefully can get the ans here.. Or is there any books that i can read on to enhance my understanding for interest rates and the economy? Thank you in advance..

A. According to monetarists rates of interest depend on monetary mass. According to non monetarists rates of interest depend on capital productivity, that s the profit companies expect when they invest, mainly, in new equipments. Short term rates depend on how much money is available to loan in the short run. If banks have got reserves to loan, this rate will be low. But banks usually have got legal reserves and 3mth loans have got a risk to analyze.
